Eye infections are commonly caused by bacteria or virus. When our eyes are exposed to a variety of pathogens infections occur that leads to itching, redness, photophobia and pain.

Identify the source

Here are some possible sources of an eye infection:

  • Local from the eyelids or remote from the sinuses
  • Trauma
  • Contact Lenses
  • Immune deficiency
  • Disease like diabetes resulting in bacteria growth or viruses.
  • Cold sores, genital herpes and other viral infections.
  • Crowded and unhygienic living conditions.
  • Poor nutrition, especially a deficiency of vitamin A.

Look out for indicators

Bacterial conjunctives causes itchy eyes that burn and discharge liquid. Your eyes may water more than usual and it appears swollen.

Blepharitis includes symptoms such as eye discomfort, redness and watering. Other symptoms are burning, more tearing, itching, light sensitivity and gritty sensation that worsens upon awakening.

Stye is a tiny and painful lump occurs inside or outside of the eyelid. It is caused by a staphylococcus bacteria. This stye breaks open after three days, drains and heals in about a week.

Keratitis- infection or swelling of cornea commonly found in people who wear contact lenses. The risk of infection raises as they wear contact for longer periods. Symptoms are eye pain, redness, decreased vision and etc.
